October brings a bounty of new releases from the #SessionsFamily! From film festival favorites hitting the big screen to two highly anticipated book adaptations streaming to your home screen. And how can we forget the return of the Queen? Let's head to Amsterdam to check out our October releases.

The Equalizer

The Equalizer

Release date: October 2, 2022

How to watch: CBS; trailer

Why to watch: The inimitable Queen Latifah's The Equalizer returns for its third season on CBS October 2 at 8:30pm. The show is so popular (Sunday's #1 scripted series, according to CBS, and averaging nearly 10mm viewers) that CBS already renewed it for season 4. Returning along with the Queen are series regulars Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Liza Lapira, Laya DeLeon Hayes, Donal Logue and Adam Goldberg. Expect Season 3 to pick up right from Season 2's cliffhanger. Need a refresher? This article should help.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Release date: October 7, 2022

How to watch: In theaters; trailer

Why to watch: Like flies to honey, A-list actors continue to flock to David O. Russell projects. His latest film, Amsterdam, is ridiculously stuffed with the hottest actors currently working. Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Christian Bale, Robert DeNiro, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, even Taylor freaking Swift, all show up for this murder mystery caper. 20th Century Studios is releasing in theaters October 7 in time for Oscar contention.

The Peripheral

The Peripheral

Release date: October 21, 2022

How to watch: Prime Video; trailer

Why to watch: What is The Peripheral? Based on the book by sci-fi master William Gibson, The Peripheral is a mind-bending new show created by Westworld's Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, themselves experts at twisting expectations and creating alternate realities. Starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Gary Carr (last seen as a frightening pimp in another Sessions project, HBO's The Deuce), Amazon Prime Video will stream the trippy show October 21.

The School for Good And Evil

The School for Good And Evil

Release date: October 21, 2022

How to watch: Netflix; trailer

Why to watch: Since the announcement that Netflix acquired the rights to Soman Chainani's popular book series, the anticipation has been hot for Freaks and Geeks creator Paul Feig's adaptation of The School For Good And Evil. The teen fantasy gives Amsterdam a run for its money with a cast that includes Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh, Kerry Washington and Laurence Fishburne, with the regal voice of Cate Blanchett narrating. Netflix has very high hopes for the film and given that there are six books in the series, school should be in session for several sequels should people wisely tune in (and it won't take a PhD to guess that they will).

The Good Nurse

The Good Nurse

Release date: October 26, 2022

How to watch: Netflix; trailer

Why to watch: Despite its seemingly benign title, The Good Nurse is a chilling story, all the more so because it actually happened. The Netflix original film is based on the true crimes of serial killer Charlie Cullen, played by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. Working as a nurse, Cullen's crimes spanned decades and was only stopped by the bravery of a suspicious colleague, played by another Oscar winner, Jessica Chastain. The Tobias Lindholm-directed film debuted at this year's TIFF to positive reviews and will stream October 26.

Armageddon Time

Armageddon Time

Release date: October 28, 2022

How to watch: In theaters; trailer

Why to watch: Armageddon Time might sound like Michael Bay's latest blockbuster, but it's actually a heartfelt semi-autobiographical period piece from Lost City of Z filmmaker James Gray. The film debuted to standing ovations at Cannes Film Festival and received particularly high praise for the performances from Succession's brilliant Jeremy Strong, Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, and the legendary Anthony Hopkins. Bring the kleenex when Focus releases Armageddon Time in theaters October 28.
